Mr. S. Torepe, of the staff of the New Brighton Borough Council has been appointed town clerk at Ohakune. An engagement is announced between Keith Samuel, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicoll. Bloomfield road, Gisborne, md Mildred Alice, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Ansell, William street, Gisborne. Commander B. C. B. Brooke, who recently returned to England after 'being naval officer in charge at Auckhas been appointed executive officer of the cruiser Orion, flagship of Vice-Admiral S. J. Meyrick, commanding the 2nd Cruiser Squadron. Mr. H. Hodgson, a member of the Gisborne Borough Council's outdoor staff for 25 years, has resigned from his position 'owing to failing health. His resignation came before the council last night, when it was accepted with regret, and a month's leave of absence on full pay was authorised. Mr. John W. 11. Piper, a mining engineer of world-wide experience, is renewing acquaintances in N'e.w Zealand after a long absence abroad. A pioneqr of dredging in New Zealand 35 years ago, Mr. Piper has since pursued his profession in Australia, .South America. South Africa, and', most recently, in Siam and Malaya. He is visiting Christelwreh and leaves shortly for London. Sir Lewis Lougher, of Glamorgan, chairman of shipping companies and a prominent shipowner, is a passenger- by the Remuera, which is due at Auckland to-morrow. Sir Lewis is a member of the Council of the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom, and was a member of the House of Commons from 1922 to 1929.

Prior to her departure for Christchurch this week, Mrs. H. Martin entertained a number of friends at her residence in Derby street. Mrs. Martin received her guests wearing a black lace frock over silver lame. Miss G. Nancy Martin assisted her mother. An interesting game of "Big Shot" was won by Mrs, W. A.
