IMPROVEMENTS MADE
TRADE AND TOURIST ARTERIES
Because of their importance to Napier as trade and tourist arteries, the president, of the, Napier Chamber of Commerce, Mr. L. C. Rolls, has the following comment to make on district highways in his annual report :--- "A construction camp of about 40 men, now located at. Glengarry under the control of the Public Works Department, is doing valuable work in the direction of widening, deviating and filling on the Napier-Taupo road. It is estimated that the work at pieaent contemplated on this highway will take some two years to complete. Already the value of the undertaking is proving itself.
"Napier-Wairoa.—The major portion of tho widening and deviation programme on this route as far as the Waikari Gorge is now almost completed, some 45,000 cubic yards of spoil having been removed. Two camps of about 35 men each are located at Sandy Creek and King's Creek. A certain amount of improving still remains to bo completed at Tutira and in the Matahoura and Waikari Gorges.
"Waikaremoana-Kolorua.—About 150 men are engaged in much-needed work on tho section from Lake House to llopuruahine. Widening and surfacing work has made excellent progress, and it is expected that by the time tho tourist season commences this highway will be for the first time an all-weather route.
