THE WEATHER

To-day’s North Island Report Blue skies were reported at East Cape this morning, but. overcast conditions prevailed elsewhere in the North Island, with light rain in places, Moderate to fresh north-westerly breezes were general. The barometer hail continued to fall steadily. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Auckland and East Cape 59 degrees, Tauranga 55, Opotiki 57, Gisborne 62, Napier 64, and Wellington 54. Rough seas were reported at Cape Campbell and East Cape; elsewhere moderate or smooth. Last Night’s Forecast A shallow depression is centred to-day north-east of East Cape, while another of the present series of westerly depressions is approaching over the South Tasman Sea. An intense anticyclone now covers the greater part of Australia. Winds: Northerly to westerly prevailing, light to moderate mainly, hut increasing at t imes, especially in and south of Cook Strait, backing temporarily to southwesterly at places in the southern portion of the South Island, but a. general southerly change probable, alter from 24 to 36 hours. Seas: ltongh about, Cook and Foveaux Straits and on the west, coast, of the South Island; elsewhere slight, to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea : Moderate to strong north-west to west winds, backing to southerlies in the southern portion: seas rather rough to rough. Weather: .Mainly fair at first, in the eastern coastal areas, otherwise changeable, and with rain at, times in most districts. Temperatures mild. Midday Forecant.

General inference.-—A rather deep depression is crossing the central portion of the Dominion and a secondary is advancing' from the Tasman Sea on to the South Island. Pressure lias risen rapidly over eastern Australia.

Forecast.—Moderate to strong northwest to westerly winds, hacking to southerlies within 24 to 36 hours. Weather, unsettled, and some rain probable. Temperatures,-becoming cooler tomorrow. Seas, moderate.
