CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

GISBORNE BODY QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon in the Borough Council chambers. The vice-president, Mr. It. W. .T. Edwards, took the chair, and others present were Messrs. James Clirisp, M. J. White, 11. Gilmer, T. E. Toucycliffe, A r . E. Sanders, T. Corson, F. It.' Ball, M. F. Robinson, C. Till card Natuseh, A. E. Carrington, IT. H. DeCosta, F. Tolerton, A. Wilson, IT. F. Forster, M. B. Peat, K. W. Bull, T. G. Lawless, and the honorary secretary, Mr. W. Hamilton Irvine. A welcome was extended by the chairman to My. Peat on his first appearance at a chamber meeting. In reply t.o a letter from the chamber pointing out the position in regard to the amount of wool sent out from the Poverty Bay district to the Napier wool sales, and asking that the figures be given separately for Poverty Bay, the advertising manager of the Wellington Publishing Company stated in a letter that in .order to avoid the possibility of a misunderstanding he proposed to amend the next advertisement in the A.N.Z.A. by combining the Gisborne and Napier figure. —The letter was received.

The letter forwarded by the chamber in regard to the graduated land tax was acknowledged by the Gisborne Borough Council and Ihe protest sent forward by I.he council to the Prime Minister, the lit. lion. M. J. Savage, was outlined. The Waikohu County Council also acknowledged receipt of a similar letter from the chamber, but stated that, as the matter did not appear to come within its province, no action was taken. From the Prime Minister a letter was received advising the chamber of receipt of its letter containing the resolution protesting against the graduated land tax, and stating that, the representations would be placed before the Government at an early date. —On the motion of Mr. Forster, a vote of thanks was accorded the sub-commit-tee who went into the question.

Notice was received from the Associated Chambers of the following resolution on defence that was passed at the last meeting of the executive of that body: “That the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand congratulates the Government, on its determination to create, without delay, a fully effective defence system worthy of New Zealand, and it undertakes to do all in its power to aid the Government in accelerating its defence system both with regard to acquiring the necessary material and in training the country’s manhood.” — The letter was received.
