A full list of South African War graves, with particulars of their locality, has been received by the South African War Veterans’ Association from the Department of Internal Affairs, the Dominion president of the association, Mr, J. I. Goldsmith, stated at the recent meeting ot the association in Wellington. As this list would probably be of great interest to those who served in South Africa, he said, it would be kept available. for their information. The question of providing access to the sandhills at the northern end of Opotiki borough was discussed this week by the Opotiki Borough Council, which has deeidod to approach the Local Government Loans Board for permission to take a poll of ratepayers to raise a loan of £3500 to provide a suitable bridge across the Otara River at the end of St. John street. Whether the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board should devote additional funds for the acquisition of gas masks so that firemen would be fully equipped in the event of outbreaks following possible hostile air raids in the future was briefly discussed by the board at. a recent meeting.
