SPEED LIMIT EXEMPTION

TRAFFIC OFFICERS

MINISTER’S INTENTION

(Par Pruss Association.)

WELLINGTON, last night.

The Minister for Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, stated yesterday that the question of fclm application of the new speed limit of 8U miles an hour in towns and thickly populated areas to police and trailic officers' cars liad arisen.

“On looking into the position," said Mr. Semple, "1 find that, according to the strict interpretation of the law, the speed limit applies without any exceptions. it was considered at the time the legislation was drafted that, by the use of sirens and other methods and the fact that all motor vehicles are identifiable by number plates, it would not be necessary to provide a special exemption for traffic officers. However, in view of the represeutaljons.which have been made to me that the speed limit, as it is, may stand in the way of the administration of the law, I am arranging ’ for a necessary' amendment to the law to be made in the Statutes Revision Bill which will be submitted to the House of Representatives this session.

"It is obvious of course, that traffic officers controlling traffic on our roads must have this right."
