GOLD ROD'S BRILLIANT RUN

SYDNEY, Aug. 29.

Gold Rod started the season, brilliantly to.day by winning the HobarLvillo Stakes at Warwick Farm with the ease of a, super cull. Although not fortunately placed at the barrier, McCarleu took him to the front as soon as the .field settled down. Gold Rod opened up a lead of half a dozen lengths, and won easing up by 2A lengths. Gustos was in the picture to the turn, finishing in fourth place, but he. rail less impressively than tho piaee"elters, Shakespeare and Bobby. Hob ilov came from the tail end of a strungout field to finish ninth. Talking, who is a Magpie colt from the New Zealand mare Society, downed many good weight-for-ago competitors in the Warwick Stakes. Cuddle stayed with Talking ill the lead to the turn, where Talking drew away and won very comfortably from the veteran Queenslander; Lough Neagh, who beat Cuddle by 2g lengths. 1 Syl validate, who was a close fourth, was doing as well as Cuddle at the finish.
