WOMEN’S GOLF TITLE

AUSTRALIAN TOURNEY TWO N.Z. REVERSES MISS KAY IN FINE. FORM (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) . ADELAIDE, Aug. 28. Conditions were ideal to-day lor the first round of match play in the women's golf championship of Australia. New Zealand suffered two reverses, Misses lielean and Ilorwell being defeated. Miss Kay was in devastating form aiul was only twice oil' the fairway over the first nine holes, which she covered in 38, to stand six up. Her opponent never won a hole. Accurate putting for the first live holes gave bliss Fleming an early lead, which Miss Kernot was unable to overtake. otherwise there was little between them.

Miss Fleming negotiated a dead stymie with a niblick at the eleventh. She went, out in 40, and turned three up. The Victorian won back a hole over the second nine.

Mrs. Pullerton-Siiiith was too steady all round for Miss Bailey, who had to Sink long putts several times on the outward journey to save herself from a terrific beating. Mrs. Fullerton-Smith dropped only two strokes to bogey on the outward run and was four up. The New Zealander, dormie three, won the short hole at the finish of the match. There was little between Miss Ilorwell and Mrs. Negus, the latter the only Western Australian ever to get into match play in this event. Miss Ilorwell was out of touch in her chip shots, whereas Mrs. Negus was strong on the day. This was the turning point of the match. Neither was startling. Miss Helean was only the shadow of the girl who shot 79 yesterday. She took three putts twice, and her seconds were poor. The players were all square at the turn and thereafter Miss Helean had opportunities, her opponent taking three putts on several greens. The New Zealander, however, was unable to press home the advantage. Fluffing her chips badly, she seemed to lose heart.

The scores were: Mrs. Brit ten-J f ones heat Miss Helean, 3 and 2.

Mrs. Negus beat Miss Horwell, 2 upMrs. Clements beat Miss Rymill, 3 and 2.

Mrs. Fullerton-Smitli beat Miss Bailey, 4 and 2.

Miss McKenzie beat Mrs. Bettington, 3 and 1. Miss Kay beat Mrs. Russell, 7 and 6. Miss Hutton beat Mrs. Robinson, 6 and 4. Miss Fleming beat Miss Kernot, 2 and 1.

The draw for Monday is: Mrs. Clements K Mrs. Negus; Mrs. BrittenJones v. Mrs. Fullerton-Smitli; Miss McKenzie v. Miss Kay; Miss Hutton v. Miss Fleming. The manager, Mrs. Codby, was disappointed at the New Zealand losses, particularly Miss Horwell’s, which was inexplicable.

The New Zealand women goiters at present in Adelaide are there primarily with the object of regaining the Tasman Cup, which an Australian team won at Titirangi, Auckland, in 1934. However, the players are taking the opportunity of competing in the ladies Australian championship and two members of the team, Mrs. R. FullertonSmitli (neo Miss Bessie GaisFord) and Miss Oliver Kay have made a good 1 start by winning the championship loursuines. The championship, which is being played on the Royal Adelaide Golf Club s links at Seaton, will' conclude next. Wednesday and on the following day the contest for the Tasman Cup will take place.
