COOK STRAIT

CROSSING BY PLANE - Sixteen years have elapsed sinea Cook Strait was first crossed by aeroplane. It was on August 25, 1920, iliat Captain Elgin Dickson, accompanied by Air. 0. 11. Hewlett, and Air. d. E. Alnore, mechanic, tlew from Wigram to the Tientlmm racecourse in -liir -lOmin ilying time, using a 110 horse power Le Rhone Avro. That flight made aviation history in New Zealand. It was made as pari of an aerial .survey scheme carried out by the Canterbury Aviation Company, of which Air. Hewlett was deputy chairman. It was realised at the time as an event of firstclass importance.

A feature of the achievement, -was that Captain Dickson and his passengers achieved the honour of being the first to cross Cook Strait by air by only a few hours. The Walsh brothers had intended to fly over front. Wellington on the following day, and the first intimation that they had that thev were forestalled was when they-’ saw a strange machine over their tempoiarv aerodrome at Fetone.
