GENERAL COMPETITION WOOL ODDMENTS SALT, JAPAN PUYS KEENLY (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, lasi night. A sale of erntchings and oddments was held to-day, when 2.°.lft hales were offered. There was a very large attendance of buyers and competition was general. There was a good demand from Continental buyers for pieces, and very keen competition from Japan for the fleece wool offered, which sold at, prices which generally showed a marked advance on the passed-in rates last April. Superior erntchings, both in halfbreds and crossbreds, sold fully up to recent northern sales, tip to lOfd being 'paid for half bred erntchings and lOd for crossbreds. The bulk of the best erntchings sold from Pd to 9ld, which shows a substantial .appreciation on last season's realisations. Secondary and inferior sorts did not sell up to expectations and fine crossbred erntchings also appeared 1o be more or less neglected, and there were some passings in these grades. The sale generally must be considered a very satisfactory one. and a good clearance was effected. RANGE OF PRICES The following is the range of prices: Merino erntchings.—To IOJd. llalfbred erntchings.—Super, Aid to 10r?<]; medium to good, Sid to DJd; seedy and inferior, GJd to 7Jd. FREEZING INDUSTRY AUCKLAND FARMERS’ CO. Net.f profits earned by the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company, Limited, during ihe year ended June JO, increased by .GG-IG-S to £25,700, and were the highest for several years. A dividend of G per cent, unchanged, requires £14,035, and £12,000, against £IO,OOO, is transferred to general reserve. The balance forward is £4.171, compared with £2710 brought in.

The directors state that the year was a successful one financially, and on account of produce handled. The year’s killings of lambs, pigs and. bobbv calves constituted a record in each class of stock, and cattle killings were greater than for many years. Sheep were killed in fewer numbers than usual. Butter received for freezing- also eclipsed the quantity handled in any previous season, but cheese receipts were smaller than tor some years. Although not up to Hie highest year’s receipts, fruit, figures showed an excess over those el the previous year. A new beef slaughterhouse was erected at Southdown early in the year, and a new mutton slaughterhouse was nearing completion at the same works. Various other improvements to buildings and plant had been effected at all four works.

WAIKATO STOCK VALUES STORE CATTLE SCARCE It is almost impossible to obtain quotations in the Waikato for any store cattle drawn from that district. The great question to be decided, reports a correspondent, is whether or ■ not there is a shortage of eat lie, and 1 this will determine values more than any other factor. One thing is certain, farmers, especially fat lamb 1 growers, are giving more attention to j breeding, so as to be independent of j markets and llieir fluctuations, and even this year the effect may be noticed in their operations. At the! same time, there seems no reason to doubt that the demand throughout the season will be other than lively. j Even weaner Jersey heifers are par- j Ocularly scarce, while already a mini -; ber of graziers have turned their attention to the buying of young empty Jersey heifers to keep pastures in order. It is not anticipated that many yavdings of store cattle from the East Coast will lie brought over this year, but Ihosc cattle which do find their way to the market no doubt will receive a. good reception. Grown steers in forward condition make from £l.O to £lO 10s; three-year-old steers, j £8 to £9; two-year steers, £7 to £7 10s; with yearling steers from £5 10s to £0; forward empty cows, £-1 15s to £5; 10s; voting empty store cows, £0 10s to £4; yearling Jersey heifers, £.*» 10s to £4 10s; smaller, £2 10s to £O. Store sheep. —Entries have been particularly small, but there is an inquiry for breeding ewes as soon as they can be safely marketed.
