RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION

FURTHER MEN ENGAGED BARTLETT’S CAMP BUSY MORE HUTS ERECTED The railway construction staff at Bartlett’s is being added to every week. This week another batch started on the construction work of this section, which extends from Gisborne to the centre of the Tikiwhata tunnel. There are now about 250 men engaged in various classes of work at different points of the section. ’ At Bartlett’s the administrative offices, carpenters’ shop, plumbers’ shop,,blacksmith’s shop and store are situated, and each day a large quantity of equipment is issued on lean out of the store to. the men and is taken to the various camps by lorries, which are kept: busy. In some cases where the camps are not immediately on the service roads the material is* taken by sledge to them. .

A light truck with a detachable ambulance has been added to the transport section.

Many huts and buildings for married and single men are being erected at the camps. The accommodation for single men consists of an Bft. by 10ft. tent on a w'ooden frame, with a wooden floor and wooden side walls up some, distance, with a door at one end, and also an open fireplace.

The married men’s quarters have three rooms, which are made with two - Bft. by 10ft. tents facing each other and spaced apart 12ft. They are framed similarly to the single men’s quarters and the space in between them makes the third room, which is provided with a small range. The walls, of this room are of timber, and a door •is provided, the whole being covered with an iipn roof, thus making very good quarters. Wash-houses containing a concrete boiler and tubs are provided.
