BRIGHT NEW COMET

VISIBLE IN SOUTHERN SKY A comet which was discovered in the northern skv on May 15 lias since moved hapidly south and is expected to be visible to the naked eye, despite strong moonlight, during the next few days, according to a, statement, Iry Mr. 1. L. 'Thomsen, of the Dominion Observatory.

It was expected on Wednesday to be only 15f million miles distant, of magnitude 5.5, which would make it easily visible to the unaided eye in the constellation of Aquarius. Air. Thomsen gave the following predicted, positionsfor the comet, which has been named Peltier’s Unmet., after its discoverer:—■ August 4 : Right ascension 21 hours 45 minutes 10 seconds. Declination, 4 degrees 8 minutes south. August 6: E.A., 21h. 29m. 14s. Dec., 20 deg. 16miii. south. August 8: R.A., 211 1 . 12m. 30s. Dec., 54deg. Bmin.-south.

The comet, was observed at the Dominion Observatory on Monday night, when it was found to be of the second magnitude, more than a magnitude brighter than expected. Its observed position at 10.30 p.m. was right ascension 211 1 . 45m. and declination one decree north.
