Those present at the meeting comprisI ed Miss C. Osborne, Dr. A. L. Singer, president, and Messrs. F. H. Lawton, A. B. Pyatt, V. EL Sanders, A. J. Stock, R. NV. J. Edwards, G. C. Jones, and R. Iv. (iambrill, secretary. A further donation of books from Mr. P>. S. Bree was acknowledged, and also a contribution of essays and plays j from Father Kerens, the president stat- j ing that Mr. Bree had previously donated a valuable and useful series on busi-1 ansa and finance which would be much appreciated by readers in the reference library* Sub-committees for the ensuing year were appointed as under:—Finance and staff, the president and Miss Osborne, ml Messrs. Lawton, Edwards, and Yawshaw; book sub-committee, the resident and Messrs. Pyatt, Sanders, lock, Jones, and A. M. Welham. The finance and stafl committee was .ked to inquire into the question of ..•ours restrictions which might apply under the amended Shops and Offices Act, members of the general committee i pressing the opinion that'lt would be crippling to the institution's public service if hours of operation wore drastii ally reduced. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT In her monthly .report, the librarian, Miss K. M. Instone, offered the follow..ig information : —• 'Circulation Department.—The number of books issued for this month is 6.d9, showing an increase of 126 volumes |as compared with the figures for last I .lime. Forty novels and 19 non-fiction i.ooks were added to the stock, and 64 novels and two non-fiction books were withdrawn. In this department 25 new members were enrolled, as compared with 24 for last June. Of these there were seven yearly, five half-yearly, Si ven quarterly, and three monthly, and three junior subscriptions. Eighteen subscribers have left, most of whom expressed their intention of rejoining in the summer. Of these seven were yearly, four quarterly, six monthly, and one junior. "Juvenile Department.—ln all, 558 books wen. 1 issued for home-reading, showing an increase of 72 over last June's figures. Six new members joined, and seven left. These were children whose subscriptions had expired some lime ago, and who have evidently left j the district. Thirty-four new books have ; been added Ibis month, and two with- \ drawn. During the month this depart- I merit has been catalogued, and prepara- i (ions have been made for the introdnc- j lion of the card-issue system. ; "Reference Department.—lt is gratify- j ing to note that more interest is being : taken by the public in the many excel- : lent works contained here. Some very j fine literature has been added this month, of" which the 24 volumes on modern business and finance donated by Mr. B. S. Bree form a useful part, lu all. there' were 40 volumes added to the reference shelves. "During the month several visitors to Gisborn'e have expressed their approval of the general lay-out of the library, and compared it favourably with larger institutions of this kind elsewhere."'
