WHARF RESCUE

CYCLIST IN DANGER SAVED BY PROMPT ACTION HEAD AND FACE INJURIES Skidding on the railway lines embedded in tlie Kaiti wharf, adjacent to No. 2 cargo shed, a middle-aged cyclist. Mr. W. Findlay, occasionally employed as a waterside worker, was this morning precipitated into the harbour, and was rescued with some difficulty, incidentally suffering injuries to his face and head in his fall.

The injured man was fortunate in receiving prompt assistance from Mr. George Dunn, a waterside worker, who, on noting the accident, flung off his coat and plunged into the water to assist Mr. Findlay. The latter, either because of his inability to swim or because of his head injuries, was unable to help himself, and was sinking when Mr. Dunn reached him and gave him support. The injured man struggled for a time, but his rescuer showed great coolness, and managed to get him to the wharfsrde, where both held to the stringers until a ladder was brought from the s.s. Tiroa, lying at an adjacent berth.

Several of Mr. Dunn’s working companions assisted in lifting Mr. Findlay to the wharf level, and later medical assistance was procured for the victim of the accident. Warm congratulations upon his promptitude in going to the assistance of Mr. Findlay were showered upon Mr. Dunn, who is a powerful swimmer, and handled the situation effectively.

The bicycle which Mr. Findlay was riding at the time of tfie accident was recovered later from the harbour.
