STATEMENT BY MINISTER
(SfflPClal to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, Hi is day. Improved .conditions for the employment of labour on farms have boon completed, but the Minister of Labour, $ the Hon. 11. T. Armstrong, who has I had several conferences with repreI sentatives of fanners' organisations on the subject, stated 'to-day that no announcement would be made till the Government had announced the guaranteed price which it proposes to pay for dairy produce. The rates of pay for farm -labour wore contingent on the amount the farmer would receive fo'r his. da>ry produce. Consequently, the completion of farm labour plans : was : he,id up in t'he meantime. 'Discussing the labour market gener- [ ally, Mr. Armstrong expressed the opinion that when the Government's prfblie works programme is in full swing be estimated that there was ' likely to be a scarcity of labour for certain .classes of work. The scheme for the employment of labour on farms, •he pointed out, would make that class of work much more attractive than it had 'been in the Pastinterviewed to-day, the Prime Minister, the R't. Hon. M. J. Savage, stated that an announcement would be made soon as to what the guaranteed price would be, but he added that the Government was not desirous of making t!he announcement till it was obliged to, in view of any possible advantage that might be taken.
