WAIROA FIRE BOARD
QUARTERLY MEETING TWO CALLS REPORTED (Hfirald Correspondent.) 'the quarterly meeting of the W.airoa Fire Board was held at the Borough Council chambers yesterday. Present: Messrs. 11. L. Marker, chairman, J. \V. Norrie, YV. 0. Hav, ('.. C. Fletcher, and W. 11. Brady. .Mr. Norrie reported on the cost of salvage sheets mentioned at the previous meeting.— It was decided that local prices should be obtained first by the superintendent, Mr. D. Byford, with power to act. The painting of the doors of the station also was authorised.
The superintendent asked permission to Jay a 'board floor over the concrete, as the meeting room was very cold. The cost would lie borne out of the last carnival funds. —This was agreec. to, and a vote of thanks passed. The superintendent reported for the quarter ended June 30: —"Two calls were received, both to chimney fires. 1 On both occasions no damage was done. 1 have disposed of the old fire reel to Messrs. Swifts, Limited, for £l, ar.VI also 100 ft. of second-hand hose with couplings attached to the Wairoa Borough Council; no price was arranged, but would suggest (id per foot for the hose and 23s (id for tho 'couplings. J have promoted Messenger G. Duley to the rank of fireman to fill the vacancy caused through the resignation of Fireman V. Feasor, who has left tho district. Ai present the brigade is without :i messenger. I would .suggest thai the Borough Council's electrical department bo asked to service the fire siren switch gear at the station about once a month for a small charge. Six practices have been held, and tho attendance and discipline have been very satisfactory." Mr. Hay asked why no prosecution resulted from the chimney fires. This should always be done when the brigade had to trim out, and at. some expense. The superintendent replied that he thought no one bothered about it. Action is to be taken in both cases. It was left to the superintendent In appoint, a messenger. It was left to tho Committee to attend to the lire siren. The rcjiorl, was adopted, and accounts totalling £BO 3s passed. The receipts for the quarter totalled £?A\ 17s Id. and (he expenditure JBl.te IBs 7d. It was decided to ask for f nit her investigation on the matter of labelling paint. The Borough Council wrote advising thai the counsel of the Municipal Association had reported that, the request to have iron on roofs nailed at each corrugation at the bottom of the sheets, and lor'rididng to be bent under the iron at the hips, had % been referred to tho
Standards Institution for inclusion in the model building by-laws, and that, both lie and ';ho inspector of fire brigades agreed thai, the request, should he given effect to--The clerk said he understood that the Dominion by-laws were being dialled, and (here were 1000 clauses in the section dealing! with concrete alone, and the limber work was yet to be dealt with.
