EROSION BY THE SEA

NEW PLYMOUTH SUBURE HOUSES IN DANGER The rapid erosion of the cliff at. Woolcombe terrace, New Plymouth, is endangering several houses, and may soon menace the main railway line. Where once there was a wide field leading to the sea-e|iff there is now a cliff nearly Jooft,. high at the back doors of several Ifomes and touching the edge of a street. A deputation of alarmed residents waited on the New Plymouth Borough Council and appealed for measures to Stop the inroads of the sea. They suggested the closing of the street, owing to the danger of the vibration of heavy traffic causing further falls of earth. The question discussed by the council was whether the value of the properties or Ihe cost of protective works would be the greater. The matter was referred to Ihe works committee to consider, in conjunction with a proposal to construct. ;i marine parade along the waterfront.
