On Saturday during the course of a game a man went off through injury, fie was replaced by a substitute, who played for a time and then withdrew jvhert the injured man recovered and rejoined his team. It was decided that the.referee was not concerned with such a happening, which was a matter for agreement between the captains of the respective teams. It -was pointed out that if a team had 16 men on the field the referee would nqt interfere until his attention was drawn to the fact, by the captain pf the, opposing team; The referee would not order a man off; that was the duty of the captain of the offending team. The rule dealing with a fair catcli Was given as follows, for the information of players:—“Law 2, a fair catch is made direct from a kick, knock-on, or throw forward by one of the opposing team. The catcher must claim the same by making a mark with |iis heel simultaneously with making the catch. A fair catch can he made in a player’s in-goal. Note: A fair Catch cannot be made otherwise than direct from tne hand, arm, tor leg from the knee to the toe inclusive.” In the discussion last evening the fact was stressed that a player taking a fair catch and wishing.to claim it must make a mark with his heel. It was not essential to call “Mark.” Unless the player deliberately made the mark with his heel simultaneously with taking the ball cleanly at the first attempt a fair catcli couid not he allowed. A fair catch could not be claimed from a rebound or from a correct pass. It could, however, be claimed from a pass forward. If a player claiming a fair catch was injured ,so that he cannot take a kick .'within three minutes, the kick would be. void, and a scrummage should he ordered.
