DANGEROUS PRACTICE
SPIKES ON ROADS LOCAL BODIES WARNED A request to avoid the dangerous practice of leaving spikes on roads lias been sent, to local bodies of the district bv Mr. O. G. Thornton, Gisborne representative of the Main Highways Board.
A copy of the letter was read at last night's meeting of the Gisborne Borough, Council, as follows: "The attention of the board has been directed to the .dangerous practice in evidence in some localities of small iron spikes being driven into the roadway for the purpose of holding measuring lines or serving as marking places, with consequent risk -to motorists of having tyres damaged. In some 'eases this practice may be adopted by employees of controlling authorities or servants of contractors.
"I have been requested to bring (jo the notice, of local authorities the necessity of exercising all reasonable care in carrying out highways work of any kind and to urge upon such authorities that, in eases where it is necessary to drive spikes o.r place similar obstructions, adequate warning notices should be displayed for the information of the travelling public. Not only is this desirable in tho general interests of the public, but, from the controlling authority's point of view, due warning should be given where any work is in hand of such a naturo that travellers are not in a position to know of the circumstances without special notification." ; ■;■. The Mayor, Mr. D-. W. Coleman, M.P., said that the matter did not refer to the Gisborne Borough as much as to other places.
The matter was referred to the bor otigh engineer, Mr, E.. R.. Thomas.
