OVATION AT NEW YORK

LINER QUEEN MARY WELCOME BY THOUSANDS LONDON, June 2. Messages from New York state that the Cunard-White Star liner,- Queen Mary, was given a mighty ovation from tugs', pleasure craft and passing ferries as she pulled into quarantine and dropped anchor for routine immigration and sanitary inspections yesterday on the completion of her first Atlantic crossing.

On shore, thousands lined Brooklyn and Stateu Island waterfronts for the first glimpse of the huge liner and, hours before she was due to reach the upper harbour, thousands more were waiting at the Battery early in the afternoon, as she started to steam slowly toward the North River pier, where she was clocked at 4.10 p.m.

It is officially stated that the fog slowed the Quetn Mary, which averaged 29.13 knots over a measured course of 3158 nautical mjles.. from Cherbourg breakwater to Ambrose Light in 4 days 12 hours 24 minutes, the arriving time being 9.3 a.m.

This compares with the Normandie's record of 4 days 11 hours 42 minutes over 3192 miles at a rate of 29.64 knots.

The Queen Mary's time from Bishop Rock to Ambrose Light was 4 days 5 Jiours 48 minutes.

The Daily Herald says the Government is advancing £5,000,000 to the CunardWhite Star Company for tho building of the Queen Mary sister ship, the King George.
