A WEEKLY WASH

HOSING GLADSTONE ROAD TRIAL TO BE GIVEN Tlic Gisborno Borough Council intends lo give a. trial to the hosing down of Gladstone road once a week to remove the small rubbish which collects in the gutters. Thu cost is estimated at 10s a week, in addition to the installation of a special hydrant at a cost of from £lO to £ls.

This was decided on at last night's meeting of the council, which adopted the following leport from the works committee:—

The engineer submitted a report on the hosing down of Gladstone road in tlio business area, and slated that at present the sweeping of Gladstone road, between JJio Post" Office, and Derby street is carried out twice dairy, at 5 a.m. and 8 a.m.

"The. by-laws provide, for the sweeping of footpaths before 8.30 a.m., but as a number of business firms do not open until this hour, the sweeping in some, cases is not carried out until after the sweeping of the road has taken place, and is, in the opinion of the engineer, responsible for the quantities of small rubbish lo be seen in the water channels during the day. "The estimated cost, of hosing down the main street from the Post Office

to Grey street once a week is 10s, covering labour and .water. In addition to this it would be necessary to install a special hydrant, estimated to cost between £lO and £ls. "The committee after giving this matter due consideration recommends that the hosing down of this street be given a trial, aaid that business firms be asked to endeavour to have the paths in front, of their premises swept as soon after 8 a.m. as possible.*'
