Races at Ellerslie The Auekalnd Racing Club's winter Carnival, the week during which Auckland is the centre of interest in sporting circles, opened at the Ellerslie racecourse on Saturday in perfect weather. Throughout the day the grounds were bathed in warm sunshine, which no doubt was partly responsible for the excellent attendance.

Farewell Morning Tea Party On Tuesday morning the committee ol j the Gisbornc branch of the l'lunket Society gave a delightful morning tea i party in the "Mary Elizabeth" as a farewell'to Mrs. W. A. Smith, who is leaving shortly to reside in Dunedin. The lea table was prettily decorated with bowls of bronze and gold African marigolds. Later the guests adjourned lo the lounge, when' the acting-president, Mrs. .1. Blair, made a delightful speech mentioning Mrs. Smith's association with the l'lunket Society since its beginning, and also her work as secretary for a number of years. At a. "Save the Baby Campaign" held here 18 years ago, Mrs. Smith was the energetic, secretary, and as the result, of that campaign the Plnnket Society had been able to build their attractive rooms in Palmerston road. In asking Mrs. Smith to accept a handsome leather shopping bag. as a small token of appreciation from the Plnnket committee, Mrs. Blair expressed regret at her departure from the district, but wished her future health and happiness in her new home. "Kitchen" Evening Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Walworth were joint hostesses at a most enjoyable •'kitchen" evening at the kilters home in Maki street on Saturday night, given in honour of Miss Vena Walworth, who was married on Monday to Mr. Norman Garland, Wairoa. The drawing room, which wa.s cleared for dancing, 'looked attractive with a huge log lire, and artistic decorations of autumn flowers and foliage. A dainty supper was served in the sitting-room, and later the guest of honour, assisted by her bridesmaid, Miss R. Chapman, opened the numerous parcels containing a useful assortment of articles for the kitchen, for which she thanked her friends.

Dance music was played by Mrs, Thomson's orchestra, while enjoyable extras were contributed by Mr. Lnwson. The Poverty Hay branch of' the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union held its monthly meeting on Friday in Messrs. Pet ties' lounge. The president-. Mrs. T. A. Field, presided over a good attendance of members. Apologies were "i coved from Mesdames J. Blair, T. B. Si.once, and J. R. Read, while two new members. Mesdames J. Jobson, and .1. '■". Benson, were welcomed. Mrs. F. Parker was elected secretary and treasurer, in place of Miss A. Field, who had resigned. Mrs. Morrison was elected housekeeping secretary, and Mrs. " n|ack was appointed press correspondent.

Victoria League Meeting 'the monthly meeting of the Victoria league was held in Messrs. Pel ties' lounge on Monday afternoon, when the president. Miss A. L. Bees, presided r.v. r a large attendance of members.

New members elected were Mesdaines W. Riddel] and T. Leslie.

Mrs. Hugh Jones submitted a report, on the musical evening held on Empire Day. which proved very successful. Payment of accounts was approved. The book ami-magazine committee reported that if had packed and posted over Icwt. of books.

A request, from the headmaster of the Muiiwai School for books to supplein,ml the school library and to distribute among the children was granted. These, books will he forwarded immediately.

The junior branch of the Victoria League held a meeting during the. school holidays, and the girls started ihc work of making toys for children in hospitals al Christmas time. The sewing circle will carry on its work this winter in the members' homes, and all requests for assistance will be dealt with by the secretary. A book aflernonn will be held at the home of the president. Miss-A. L. Rees. on the aflernonn of Saturday, June 13. The next- meeting will be" held on Monday. Julv 6.

Mothers' Union. The monthly meeting of the Mothers' Union, held yesterday afternoon, was preceded by a short devotional service al Holy Trinity Church conducted by Canon A. E. .Hall.

The members then adjourned to the Parish Hall, when 1 the president., Mrs A. !•'. Hall, presided over an attendnhop. of 70 members. Apologies for absence were received from Mcsdamcs |{. .Tonkins, E. Trowoll, W. E. Goffe and Stevens. Welcomes were extended to Mesdaiucs Holloway (Opotiki), Dnnshade, Robinson, and Aires. In welcoming Mrs. Aires, Mrs. f.. Balfour, on belinlf of the members, p/esented her with n gift for her pantry. A fetter, was received from Mrs. W. A, Smith stating that she was leaving the district. Mrs. A. I'\ Hall proposed (liat a letter be sent to her conveying best wish.es to her for the future, and expressing regret at losing her from their midst. Mrs. Hooper seconded the motion, which was carried. Mrs. A. F. Hall read "Why Be Good," which proved very interesting, and was followed by a discussion on the subject.
