There has been an extraordinary example in Hastings of the old adage that it is an ill wind that does not do some good. Since the big windstorm in Hawke’s Bay one hardware firm has sold no fewer than 500 axes. This abnormal demand was created on account of the largo number of trees blown down.
Twenty men are working on the East Coast lino at Raupunga, where extensive filling and clearing operations are necessary bnfore the railway track is brought, to the required condition, states the Napier Telegraph. The area upon which the men are at present concentrated is wet and heavy in nature, and it is anticipated that it will be some time before the work at this point is completed.
Some concern as to its future was expressed at the annual meeting in Wellington of the Royal Society of New Zealand. The special commit tee to consider closer liaison with kindred societies was Instructed to continue its work for another year, the comniitteo having expressed the opinion that any stops toward closer co-operation between the society and other scientific bodies would be to the advantage of science generally. The president, Bishop H. W. Williams, said the society should be careful that it did not become an organisation merely for granting fellowship. The society should! give a lead to scientific thought. Members suggested that scientific societies,as distinct from technical societies, should be members of the Royal Society.
