THE SOCCER CODE

SATURDAY'S PLAY THISTLE BEAT UNITED i The,,senior soccer game, Thistle v. ♦(Tinted, was played at the Guilder's "Road Reserve on Saturday under adverse weather .conditions. Both, teams were below their full strength. The play, like the weather, was mostly drab and uninteresting, with few bright patches-. United set the ball in motion, but soon lost possession, and Easton ■ sent a dangerous ball, from the right, across United's goal. In their next raid Thistle scored, J. Watt paving the way for J. Easton to net. Thistle increased' their lead a little, later, McLean showing speed and determination to beat several men. Drawing tho defence, he made Watt's task of scoring comparatively easy. Two goals down in 10 minutes was disastrous for United, who then took a. hand in the game and might have scored, but ineptitude in front of the goal lost them many chances. Bridge had' one good shot which -was well saved by Thistle's goal-keeper. Thistle added another to their total when Watt accepted a cross front the right, and beat T. Hill. King was prominent, in a, United attack- and then passed to the left wing, McCalhirii, who sent the hal! on to Bridge. Tho movement culminated in the latter opening United's account. The half-time score, was Thistle 3, United 1.

After the interval Bridge and then Burns scored good tries. Pilkington, who was doing sound work in. backing up King, followed up a long shot from the right, and met it on. tho goal line, breasting through to reduce United's leeway. Thistle went further ahead when McLean netted after good combined play. J. Easton was working hard, "and, after somo loose play in midfield,; sent Watt off lo score Thistle's fifth goal. United kept on with determination and were having as much of the play as their opponents. Tho final goal of the match was scored by Bridge* and, was fully deserved on the run of the," play. A. rather featureless game ended with Iho result, Thistle 5, United _3. , ■
