Lyons, said he was confident that when the measure of trade which will really he concerned us a result of the now tariff scheme is realised by Japan,-the threat of re> prisals will not bo pursued. •■ A message from Tokio reports Mr. K. Debuchi as stating that he is too grieved to find words ro comment on Australia's'action, which has ruined his mission and is contrary to Mr. Lyons' assurances.
Mr. J. G. Latham, the leader of the Australian Eastern mission in WM, has cabled suggesting that .Japan await experience of the new system before acting.
REACTION IN BELGIUM THREAT OF EMBARGO BRUSSELS, May M. • The Belgian Consul in Sydney has been instructed to notify the Commonwealth of the denunciation as from June 1 of tho provisional agreements, fixing the imports of cereals and frozen meat into Belgium. The decision has hnen taken as a result of Australia increasing tho duties on cotton goods, silk tissues and lubricants. Unless negotiations with the Commonwealth are successful, Australian products will bo banued from Belgium after August 1.
