DOMINION AIR MAILS
CONSIDERABLE LOSS SERVICE MAY STOP (Por Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last nigld. “It will be a great disappointment to mo if we have to discontinue, the internal air mail service and I know that the Government will be just as disappointed,” said the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. .Tones to-day. “However, unless, the public gives the service more patronage that is what- we shall probably have' to do. The trial period of three months is now nearly up. Appeals have been made to the public and Chambers of Commerce in the cities have sent' out circulars to their members, urging them to make more use of the air mail, but there has not been much improvement-. “The number of letters keeps at, a fairly steady level, at which the service cannot, be run, except, at a. lairly congjUprable loss on the year’s working. The department, does not want !o make a profit. If we can cover costs, we shall be quite satisfied. “The surcharge on letters is small but, aparently, the extra penny or twopence looks big to some business people. It will be a great, pity if the service lias to be stopped, because we really do need air mails in N<?w Zealand.”
