POWER TO AMALGAMATE

DOMINION LOCAL BODIES LEGISLATION INTENDED ACTION NOT COMPULSORY (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A definite announcement was made to-dav bv the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, that he would bring down local government legislation this year .after next month’s break in the session. Mr. Parry said the bill proposed would give power to facilitate the amalgamation of local bodies with a view to substantially reducing the present number. The Minister said there was a great deal of overlapping and duplication at present, which made for increased overhead charges and administration costs.

The bill would not make any amalgamations compulsory, but only provide a means of bringing about this desirable end.
