Consequent on the removal of -Monsignor Villerabel from the Archbishop! ic of Rouen, the Archbishop of Cambrai has suspended .Monsignor Villerabel’» appointees, the Mother Superior Kupharse of the convent of Ernemmit, and two of her feminine subordinates,'and also tlie supervisor, Canon Cahard.
A message from Paris on May 16 stated that a sensation bad been caused in Roman Catholic circles throughout. Franco owing to the Rope removing th(! septuagenarian, Monsignor Villerabel, Primate of Norm an by, from the Archbishopric of Rouen. This was the climax to a long controversy in which Monsignor Villerabel took action for the alleged misappropriation of funds .against his vicar-general, Monsignor Berlin, in the Civil Court instead of in the Ecclesiastical Court, thus infringing canon law. The Diocesan Courts hail already convicted Monsignor Bertin, but the Vatican quashed the conviction. Thereupon the Ministry of the Interior intervened and reopened the case.
Three times Monsignor Villerabel refused to resign on the ground that by so doing he would admit a fault ol which lie was not guilty. The Pope appointed the Arch-bishop of Cambrai to administer the archdiocese, but .Monsignor Villerabel refused to leave the Palace, which he held on a lease from the Government.
