45-MILE GLIDE IN STORM
DOCTOR’S ADVENTURE IN AND OUT OF FLOODS LONDON, April 15 Dr. W. Richardson, a member of the London Gliding Club, who disappeared uuring a snowstorm at a Derbyshire giiding contest on Sunday, was yesterday found lo have landed safely after a Might of about. 45 miles. lie came down at Bet ley. 10 miles south-east of Crewe, and spent the night at a farm. The gliding contest was held at Castleton, Derbyshire, and Dr. Richardson's -ailplane was launched from Mam Tor. A heavy snowstorm, broke while lie was in the air, and when it cleared there was no sign of his sailplane. Inquiries were madi in I lie surrounding mountainous country. An aeroplane made a survey of the district yesterday and search parties were organised. Later, news was received by the secretary of (he Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club, organisers of the gliding contest, that Dr. Richardson was safe at Wrinehill .Mill farm, Rellev. Dr. Richardson landed 30 miles from his starting point, hut lie estimates that his course took him about 45 miles Ho was in the air for hours. "After taking off, I circled above Cnstleton for about two hours,” lie said, “and then noticed a storm coining up from the north-past..
“It was great fun flying in and out of the pillars of cloud which preceded the storm. ! passed over the north mid of iSloke-on-Ti'eiiL but as the storm began to break' I gradually lost heigh! ami landed quite unharmed in a. field af Wrinehill.”
Dr. Richardson telephoned to his home in London, and sent a telegram to the glider camp, which was not delivered until yesterday.
