COSSACKS IN FAVOUR
NEEDED BY ARMY STATUS RESTORED MOSCOW, March 9. The. Cossacks of the Don, Kuban, and Terek are to be oiFcially restored to their former status in the army. This decision has been taken by M. Stalin. He said to a delegation of Cossacks at the Kleinlin that the army again needed their lighting tradition and clan discipline. Henceforth they are again to be known as "The Cossacks." The clansmen had opposed any incorporation in the Soviet army which, would mean the. loss of their identity. Now they are again to be allowed to wear their striking uniforms and to carry their long sabres as in Tsarist days.
The lambus steel-tipped whips, without which no real Cossack is complete, are not mentioned in the order. A parade of Cossacks is to be held at Rostoff on March 14. If will be followed' by a trick-riding display. The Kuban Cossacks have sent ft fiercely-worded message to Marshal Voroshiloff, Defence Minister, assuring him that, they "will slash with their sabres the heads of all who attempt to ci'oss the Soviet frontier." The message adds, "When wo hear you calling us to battle, we shall leap upon our swift horses and finish* off the enemy for good and all."
