SMALL INCREASE

GISBORNE POPULATION BOROUGH TOTAL 13,581 477 MORE THAN IN 1926 COUNTRY DISTRICT LOSS GisborneV population has increased by 477 in the past 10 years, but the district comprising the borough and three surrounding counties improved by only 207. This position is shown in the census returns completed to-day by the enumerator, Mr. G. Nelson, and his staff, who have worked at high pressure, during the past three weeks in order to bring the task to early finality. The Gisborne Borough has a population, according to. the census figures, oi 13,581, including 215 Maoris. The whole district under Mr. Nelson’s control, comprising the borough, Cook, Waikohu and Uawa counties, and the l'atutahi and To Karaka town districts, has a population of 26,198, including 3113 Maoris. The country areas have declined in population, particularly the Waikohu County, which has suffered a 20 per cent loss, going down irom 2930 to 2357 Europeans, ’l’lie Maori population in the county totals 600. There are more males in the Gisborne country districts than females, but the borough contains more females than males. The Maoris of the male sex in the district outnumber the females by 121, per cent. These statistics are interestingly set out. in the figures made available by Mr. Nelson to-day. They are as follow: COMPARISON WITH 1926

3252 BOROUGH DWELLINGS UNOCCUPIED TOTAL 47 Census returns reveal that there- are 3252 dwellings in the borough of Girfhorne. Of these 47 are unoccupied, and nine are in course of construction. j Details are set out in the following two tables, tho total given in. ,t,he first being the aggregate of completed dwellings shown in both tables:

MAORI PAPERS NEATER ENUMERATOR’S OPINION Maori census papers were generality neater than those of tho pnkeha, and the writing was usually more legible. The chief postmaster at Gisborne, Mr. G. Nelson, who is enumerator for the Gisborne district, made a statement to this effect to-day, when releasing the figures for his area. lie stated that the people as a whole seemed to have made a genuine effort to Jill in tho papers properly, but despite that a number of queries will have to he checked up before the job is finally washed up as far as the Gisborne end is concerned. .Some questions, mainly those concerning unemployment, seemed to be misunderstood, and it was expected that in a number of cases sub-enumerators would have to return to a few households to make further inquiries. The sub-enumerators had done their work very well indeed, and he found in them a most willing team. The inside staff had been working overtime almost every night since census night checking the papers carefully. The papers were now being dispatched to Wellington for final perusal and genera) statistical purposes. Paring the census checking, Mr. Nelson and his Staff found the Maori papers the easiest to read. Most of the Maori papers lmd been written out with meticulous care, the writing being neat and more legible than the average pakeha writing. When working long hours on a tedious job, the legibility was particularly appreciated.
