LOCUST CAMPAIGN STOPS CAPETOWN. Feb. 1.4. This veal' an abnormal number o! storks from Europe have migrated to youth Africa, and their appearance has saved the Government thousands nl pounds. The storks have acquired a taste fm locusts, and this season they have destroyed so many that the Governments annual locust campaign—costing T2d.CC 1 .- CD3 a year— Inis been suspended, stated Colonel Reitz, .Minister for Agriculture, here to-day. The storks, assisted by thousands ot hawks and oilier birds, are doing the work of the State’s locust-killers. The Minister also revealed that the Union had received requests from Europe to prevent storks being poisoned during the locust season. The locusts are sprayed with an arsenic solution, and the storks eat their poisoned bodies and die. The Union is taking steps to prevent this happening in I lie future.
