SMUGGLERS GO ON STRIKE
AND GET MORE PAY JOB GETTING RISKIER FRONTIER GUARDS ACTIVE (From ;i Special Correspondent) (By Air Mail) PAMS, March 21. Smuggler:! on the T'raiico-Jielgian iroiitier have struck for a 200 per cent, increase in pay and have won their strike. This is the infonualion which has just cuuie into the hands oi the police at liazebrouck, Northern France. The smugglers are employed by master-smugglers, who put up tiie capital for contraband-running, and take the profits, but run no personal risks. Itoccnlly, pleading the increasing vigilance of the frontier guards, the striking smugglers refused to “pass” consignments of toroceo for a more las a time, and demanded a substantial increase. A large number of them met in tin empty barn near Steenworde and put lheir demands to their employers. A spokesman for the .strikers said that .‘l2 of their number had already fallen into the hands of the frontier guard and -were in ILazobrouek prison, special mobile Customs brigades had been formed to hound those still at liberty, and finally the courts were showing redoubled severity against an arrested smuggler. FV these reasons, they must; have •in increase .of at least 200 per cent. The master smugglers agreed to the demands, heavy as they were, and the Hazebiouck Customs ollieials to-day arrested two smugglers who confirmed the success of the strike.
