WAIROA ROADS

ENGINEER’S REPORT (Herald Correspondent.) In addition lo reporting fully on the state of the main highways, the actingengineer, Mr. R. \V. Hawthorne, reported to the Wairoa County Council as follows: "Ngatapa suspension bridge: As instructed, l have made an inspection of the above bridge, which is in need ol repairs estimated to cost approximately £4O. I also interviewed Mr. Jl. M. Andrews regarding his request for assistance in maintaining a cable across Hit; Moliaka River for the transport of bis wool. At the present time Mr. Andrews has a cable erected across the river about 50 to 60 chains below (he Ngatapa suspension bridge, and over which he sends all his wool and brings back bis stores. The cable is seven chains long and carries a very heavy cage on an unsuitable traveller. In transporting wool and stores, the cage and load cannot be operated on (lie cable without the aid of horses, and in fact it is even as much as one mail can do to pull his own weight across. To effect any improvement in the present system the cable would need to be approximately three chains longer, more effectively anchored, a better type of traveller used, and an efficient, means of winching devised. The access to the Ngatapa suspension bridge is in a very bad state of repair, especially on flic Jlawke’s Bay County side. T understand the bridge is used solely for stock, more particularly sheep. “Ngamotu road metalling: The metalling of the portion of the above road, as authorised by the council, from its junction with tho main highway to the llaxmill cottage, has been completed and has made a fairly satisfactory job.

“There are several other matters requiring attention from the engineer’s instructions, but through the illness of Mr. Smith these matters have been unavoidably postponed.”
