LEVY ON WOOL

GOVERNMENT FAVOURABLE LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY GIS BORNE ME ETING A SKEI ) 'The Goyerninent has made ;i promise to give legislative authority to make 11 Jevy on wool "foi 1 propaganda purposes, it' the industry supports the proposals. The Poverty Bay A. and r. Association received advice to this effect from Mr. W. S. Bennett, .supervisor in New Zealand for -Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited, one of a committee appointed to make representatives to the Government on the matter, and the meeting decided to ask co-operation from the Farmers' Union and the Sheepowuei's' Union with the idea of calling a meeting] in Qisborne, Mr. Bennett wrote that he and the secretary of the wool committee recently waited on the Minister of Agriculture to ascertain whether the Government was prepared to grant statutory authority to make a levy. "After the facts had been outlined," the writer added, "the Minister was asked 'whether he would introduce legislation providing for a compulsory levy for propaganda purposes if the industry supported such proposals''' and I am pleased to advise that he gave an affirmative assurance. This, therefore, now places the onus upon the representatives of the industry to take the necessary steps to secure the co-operation of wool-growers for tha.fc purpose. "May I therefore suggest that your association .should collaborate with the Woolbrokers' Association of your district, and arrange a meeting of woolgrowers to discuss the matter, in which case T hope you will secure a sufficiently representative attendance and unanimity of opinion in favour of the proposal." It was decided to communicate with the Farmers' Union and Sheepowners' Union asking for co-operation in organising a meeting of wool growers in. Gisborne.
