PACIFIC SHIPPING
PROMPT ACTION NEEDED AID TO EMPIRE LINES (Reed. March 28, noon.) LONDON, March 27. Mr. Alexander Shaw, the president, of the Chamber of .Shipping of the United Kingdom, in a statement'to The Times. said' he was gratified at the proposed London Conference with reference to the Pacific shipping problem, which, however, had been delayed until the eleventh hour. He explained that the losses on the Canadian-Australian line in 1934 reached six figures. Under the present conditions survival was out of the question. The losses had been continuous now and could not be supported. "If the Governments really wish to retain the British service between then territories and not rely on foreign subsidised services, a prompt decision is ess.ential," he said.
Lord ISledisloe, speaking in the House of Lords, drew attention to the unfair American subsidised competition in the Pacific- and asked' the Government to deal more- firmly with it. The Do minions'alone could not stand up against this heavy subsidisation.
■■" Lord Templemore replied that the subject was engaging the Government's attention.
Sir Jumps Parr, who is representing New'Zealand'at the conference, told the Associated.'Press: "There is no reason to delay the conference on the ground Of New Zealand's representation. Thus far, the British- Government has not consulted me."
It is understood that Mr. Walter Runciman is eager to hold the conference at the earliest possible moment. •
