CAUGHT IN CYCLONE
JAPANESE VESSEL CARGO OVERBOARD NEWCASTLE, March 8. The Japanese steamer Koki Maru, which arrived al Newcastle this afternoon, carrying a cargo of timber direct from Hie west coasi of North America, fid 10 perilous minutes at the height ol ;, evclone which she encountered five days after the beginning of the voyage. Two boats were carried' away, the side of one of the saloons was badly bill lercd. and some of the timber that -wr.s being carried on deck went overboard. The master. Captain Hastgava. said here to-night that, thanks to the fact lhid equal quantities of timber bad been lost from both sides of the deck, iho vessel was on n adequately even keel. He sent a radio message to American coastal stiitions that he had met a cyclone and would appreciate it if they would keep in touch with him. Help was not required.' however. His vessel stood up to the rest, -of the had weather splendidly. When things calmed down he spent two days in retrimming the cargo. The loss of the two boats was not vital, because there was ample accommodation for the whole of the crew in other boats which be had aboard.
