WAIROA RUGBY

ALL BLACKS HONOURED PLAYERS .COMPLIMENTED SUB -UNION ANNUAL REPORT (Herald Correspondent.) The selection of two former representatives of the Wairoa district, for inclusion in the 1936 All Blacks team for the tour of Britain, and of three others for the Maori tour of Australian States, provided the highlights of the Wairoa Rugby sub-union's season, a review of which has been prepared in anticipation of the annual meeting, which is to be held to-mor-row evening. The report expresses the congratulations of the districts to those players honoured by national representative selections, and incidentally refers to the number of All Black trial games as one reason for the comparative non-success of the season in regard to local football In the cour.se of his report, the chairman of the sub-union's committee, Mr. A. G. Nolan, states: INTERESTING FOOTBALL "The past season produced interesting football, both in the club competitions and in representative matches, of which latter there was a good programme, for in addition to the usual annual matches, visits were received from the Bay of Plenty and Tolaga Bay,' while extra visits were paid to Damtoviike and Tolaga Bay. "Challenges for the 'Barry Cup were successfully met, the cup remaining in Wairoa. "From the financial side, the season has not been so successful, the season's working resulting in ,a deficit of £IBO 7s. "This is due to a number of contributing causes—'poor gates due to the worst weather the district has possibly ever suffered; a superfluity of All Black trials and the growth of broadcasting match which, in view of the weather, has kept football 'fans' Iby the comfort of their firesides. "The coining season, however, shows every indication of being most successful; enthusiasm is keen throughout New Zealand and more especially so on this coast. Our neighbours, both north and south, are already preparing for a great Rugby season, and patrons should be treated to excellent football both in club and representative fixtures. I would suggest to the incoming committee that they endeavour to arrange their representative fixtures at the end of the season, and to carry through their club competitions witn as little interference as possible. ENCOURAGING YOUNGER, PLAYERS 'With a view to encouraging foolball generally, our colts received a visit and returned a visit to Hangaroa subunion, and the experience gained should stand these players in good stead in their promotion lo representative honours. "A third grade representative team

journeyed to Gisborne, and we trust this reopening of thirds’ representative matches will bo the forerunner of a regular fixture. “Wo offer our congratulation to T. Reid and W. Collins on their selection for All Black honours in the team which went Home; to P. Smith, C. Smith and 11. Mataira on their inclusion in the Maori All Black team to Australia. “Our thanks are due to Messrs. .T, Oemmel), sole selector, seniors; R. McDonald, junior representative selector; W. Dunn, representative on the H.8.R.U.; W. A. Oarer, honorary auditor; Dr. R. B. Jardine, honorary surgeon, and the press for full and impartial reports.
