ANZAC DAY PICTURES
REFUSAL REAFFIRMED POSITION IN WHANGAREI The decision made at the previous meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council refusing permission for pictures to be screened on Anzac Day was reaffirmed this week when a motion of which the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, had given notice, to rescind the previous motion, was lost. A" renewed application from the manager of a theatre to screen pictures on the night of Anzac Day, and a similar application by another manager, were before the council. "My sole reason for giving notice of motion," said the Mayor, 'was that documents before the council were not available when the council made its previous decision These documents are the replies to questions submitted by the manager of a picture theatre in Whangarei to returned soldiers, asking their views on the screening of pictures on Anzac Day. To the 156 letters sent out, 71 replies were received. Of these 54 were in favour, and 17 against the proposal." Mr. J. W. Parkin said there were 400 members of the Returned Soldiers' Association in the district and he and many others had not received a question paper. 'The Dominion association was responsible for the legislation governing Anzac Day," said Mr. Parkin,, "and they should have n say in any suggested change. The returned soldiers have very litle left of Anzac Day, and what remains should be preserved." The Mayor's irotipn was lost, and the further applications to screen pictures were refused.
