ANNUAL MEETING BIRTHDAY PARTY The Waereiign-a-hika Women’s Institute held its first annual meeting and birthday in the Waerengn-a-hika School on Saturday. During the morning the meeting was held, Mrs. Barrow presiding over a good attendance. The organiser, Mrs. McCliskie, was welcomed, and apologies were received from absent members. Birthday greetings ,‘iad good wishes were received from the Poverty Bay federation and from the Makaraka-Matawhero institution. An invitation to attend this institute’s birthday was accepted. An apology was received from Mrs. Nasmith, a demonstrator, who was unable to attend last meeting. A letter of thanks was received from the matron of the 'lleni Matoroa Children’s Home for a donation of jam. A letter received from the Y.M.C.A. regarding. a:■ sheep drive was fully explained by Mrs. McCilskie, and a “bring and buy” will be held noxl meeting to raise funds for it. It was decided to have an entry in the forthcoming Plunket photographic competition.
The annual report and balancesheet. were adopted. A special vote of thanks was- passed to all those who assisted the institute in any capacity during the year, and also Mr., Stephens, lion, auditor.
The officers for the ensiling year are as follow: —President, Mrs. Barrow; vice-president, Mrs. O’Connel; secretary, Mrs., Greig; committee, Miss Jennings, Mesdanles Paulson, O’Connel, Greig, Richardson, and Wilson; •competitions secretary, Airs. Torrie; commission table, Mrs. Wilson; librarian, Mrs; O’Connel; press correspondent, Miss Fenton; link correspondent, Mrs. W. Torrie. Mrs! McCliskie congratulated the members on having such a successful year and spoke also on the cordial spirit prevailing in the institute. She was accorded a vote of thanks.
Competitions resulted: —Jelly: Airs. Duncan, 1; Airs. Barrow, 2; ALiss Boyd, 3. Dahlias: Airs. Brown, 1; Airs. Clarke, 2; Afiss Jennings, 3. Linen darn: Airs. Duncan, 1. Aggregate prizes were also presented for the last six months: —Cooking: Airs. O’Connel and Airs. Duncan, equal. Flowers: Airs. W. Torrie. Sewing: Mrs. Duncan. It was announced that Mrs. L. Torric’is little son is the first institute baby. SOCIAL AFTERNOON The birthday party took the form of a social afternoon, members of the Ormond and Patutalii institutes being entertained. A beautiful bouquet was presented to Airs. AlcCliskie as a token of her great interest. Bouquets were also received by Airs. Greig and Airs. Barrow from the visitors. Community singing led by Airs. Barry was entered into', with zest. Items were given bv the following:—Ataster Eugene Invin, a recitation, “People”; Airs. Barry, songs, “My Birthday” and “Love’s Old Sweet Refrain”; Miss Annette Shields, recitation, “Greenstone Tiki”; Miss Haves, song, “Sunshine Soldiers.” An interesting competition “Parts of Clothing,” was held outdoors, an opportunity being taken by gardening enthusiasts to admire the beautiful school grounds. Indoors afternoon tea was served at long tables decorated with autumn flowers and streamers of red and gold, the institute’s 'colours. Pride of place was taken by the beautiful cake with one candle, made by Airs. Paulson and Airs. Barrow.
Greetings and best wishes were received from the presidents of the visiting institutes and the cake was cut by Mrs. AlcCliskie.
A beautiful cushion donated by a member was won by Miss Alullan. Social chat and community singing, followed by the National Anthem, brought a .most enjoyable afternoon to a close.
