INDUSTRIAL RECOVERY

TREND IN BRITAIN

UNEMPLOYMENT TOTALS

FALL OVER FOUR MONTHS

(British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9.30 a.m. RUGBY, March 10'. Unemployment in Britain last month fell by 134,701, thus recovering some of the ground lost in January when, owing to the prolonged spell of severe weather, it grew by 291,157. The workless total on February 24 was 2,025,021, which was 134,701 less than on January 20, and 260,442 less than a year ago. The total employed, 10,475,000, was 126,000 up on the month before and 378,000 more than a year previously. The continuance of industrial recovery is shown by a comparison of the number of unemployed in each of the past four months, with those of the corresponding months of a year ago. All show a decrease as follows: —February, 260.442; January, 165,651; December, 217,250; November, 202,223.

Next month the unemployment figures should again fall below the 2,000,000 mark.

The improvement in February was most marked in the building industry, and was largely attributable to the milder weather conditions. The unemployed total was made up of 1,589,316 men, 65,584 boys, 308,357 women, and 61.784 girls.
