ANGRY SCENE IN HOUSE
(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.)
SYDNEY, March 10
The New South Wales Government lias appointed Judge Markell a Royal Commissioner to inquire into charges made in Parliament against members of the police force, whose duty has been to carry out raids on illegal, betting shops and procure conviction's for starting price betting offences. ) Substantially Mr. Justice Markell will inquire whether the police have deliberately “framed” men for these offences, whether false evidence or intimidation has been employed, whether innocent persons have been arrested and charged,. and whether .the police, without just cause, have entered and raided the homes of private citizens.
Mr. Justice Markell will also- inquire whether the police have' deliberately refrained from arresting the principals of betting shops while arresting and charging minor persons. OBJECTION TO COMMISSION.
During an angry scene in the Legislative Assembly to-day, Mr. J. T. Lang, Leader of the Opposition, attacked the Government for not allowing the betting charges involving the police to be investigated by a Parliamentary select committee instead or by a Royal Commission.
He declared that no member of the Opposition would give evidence or make any statement before a Royal Commission, which was, nblEmgUmbre or less than a “white-washing institution.”
He added that one of., the . very judges who had dealt with betting appeals had been appointed a“ commissioner.
The Minister of Justice, Mr.',L. O. Martin, replied that the Government would not be content with anything but a most thorough and searching investigation of the allegations, which involved the honour and" reputation of the police force. " (
