Several charges against . farmers of failing to dear ragwort and' blackberry from their lands were heard before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., at Whakatane. Arthur Farrelly was convicted and fined £1 and £1 11s costs: ,T. J. Fenton was fined £1 and £2 11s; James Lyon was convicted and ordered to pay costs, £1 0s 6d; and Herbert N. Theobold was fined £1 and £2 11s costs.
Fishing from the Taranaki street wharf n. Wellington fisherman hooked a big stingavee, and after a -brief struggle hauled it round to the boat steps, where it was speared and landed. It measured approximately three feet across, with a proportionately long tail. The weight was estimated' to he in the neighbourhood of 601 b.. hut before the fish could be photographed or weighed a crowd of small boys had pounced on it, mutilated it and flung it hack into the harbour.
