WAIKOHU COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING'
The Waikohu County Council met today. There were present: Crs. A. A. Eraser, chairman, 11. H. Dods, C. Gaukrodger. ,1. B. Williams, H. J. 1?. Tomblesoh, 11. C Boys, and M. Doyle. Mr. Mooney wrote requesting that the culvert and drains near his property be repaired.—The matter was left to the engineer for attention Mr. F. 11. Tonks wrote requesting that, repairs to the Motu Front, rood near Ids access be put in hand as soon as possible.—The clerk was instructed to reply that repairs were in hand, but that the'work was held up by the wet weather.
Mr. S. li. Currie applied for two weeks' leave, of absence from April 15. Leave was granted. Miss li,. Mills, secretary of I lie Te Karaka Ranger Company, wrote asking permission to look after the, plots on the Monument Corner, Te Karaka.-Permis-sion was granted. Mrs. YV. McMillan, Waipaoa, wrote asking that the approach to the culvert near her property-be filled in.—The matter was referred, to the engineer and member for the riding. The manager of the Bank of New Zealand. Gisbome, submitted a form of authority for the bank to pay interest coupons and debentures in the conversion loan as they fall due.—The authority was signed and sealed. A memorandum received from the Minister of Public Works stated that the department, would subsidise £1 for £1 expenditure on upproved reconstruction work made necessary by the recent floods.—The engineer stated that he had submitted estimates of repairs for the approval of the district engineer. The chairman of the Main Highways Board advised that it would be part oi the traffic inspector's duties to sec that heavy motor vehicles were properly licensed, and that the question of taking over the present, inspector's equipment would receive consideration. —The letter \vas received.
A Gazette extract was received proclaiming Thursday as the weekly halfholiday in the. county. The' district engineer advised that the necessary action to change, the name of the Tarndale road could be taken when next year's estimates are prepared, if bis head office approves.—The letter was received. The secretary of the New Zealand Counties' Association wrote asking the council's views in reference to compulsory national health insurance.—lt was agreed, to support the proposal strongly. A report was presented dealing with the proceedings of the hospital rating conference held on February 6, 1936, when representatives of the Municipal Association, Hospitals' Association and the Counties' Association were present. —The. letter was received. The Department of Labour forwarded a revised scale of relief pay for men on No. 5 scheme and sustenance.—The letter was received. The clerk was instructed to prepare data for application for special legislation to authorise the raising of a supplementary loan in connection with the formation of Tarndale road. The engineer and member for the Ngatapa riding were authorised to draw up a scheme for the reorganisation of the maintenance contract. Accounts amounting to £4273 were passed for payment. The tender' of Messrs. W. Goosman and Company for the supply of maintenance metal for the Waibnka main highway was accepted at 13s 6d a cub. yd. delivered.
A resolution to pay the council's share of the improvements to the Gisborne aerodrome by means of instalments spread over a number of years was rescinded, so that the money could be raised by means of a joint loan with the borough. It was agreed to hold llio next meeting on Wednesday, April 8, instead of April 14. owing to the Easter holidays. The engineer was authorised to do some maintenance metalling on Faulkner's road.
