LORD GOWRLE'S VIEWS
MANY LOYAL ADDRESSES MKLBOURNE, Feb. 22. Addresses expressing loyalty and devotion to the Throne and to the King were presented to the Governor-General, Lord Gowrie, at State Government House yesterday. The addresses also offered con gratuiations and good wishes to Lord Gowrie upon his appointment as Gover-nor-General and his elevation to the Peerage. Lord Gowrie said that if he were to carry out the duties/ of Governor-General as he believed they- should be carried out, it was essential that he should make himself familiar, as far as passible, with the conditions, problems, outlook, and mentality of each of the component parts of this great continent-. “I have lived long enough to know that it is only by personal contact and firsthand information that one can get a true picture of the problems and the outlook of the various sections of the community.” he said “Not. only does each State and each great, city have particular problems of its own, but the States and cities also—quite naturally, perhaps—are apt. to view the problems common to all from different angles. ‘‘There can be no doubt that unity and co-operation of its component parts areessential to (he progress and prosperity of Australia. If. by acquiring an evenly balanced outlook, 1 can at any time help to smooth over difficulties, i.o clear up doubts and misunderstandings, in fact, to lubricate the complicated machinery of the Federal Constitution, my services, such as they are, and for what they are worth, will always be available,”
