EXHIBITION TENNIS
COCHET ON SATURDAY Never before have Gisborne tennis enthusiasts had an opportunity of witnessing a player of such outstanding merit ns Henri C’ocliet, French tennis star and former world champion. On Saturday afternoon at tho Gisborne club's courts, Butene road, Cocliet .will piity a, series of exhibition matches with .1. ‘Willard, A. Willard and L. Baker. Australian professionals. Wherever 'ochet lias played he has quickly become the idol of the crowd. His performances on tho court have made tennis history. He is a finished master of rhe game, and there is no better tennis education for young players than to see the Frenchman in action. The other members of the team are all clever players, having gained distinction on Australian courts. For Saturday's match, reserved seats are obtainable from Mr. M. R. Maude and Messrs. Clirisp and Chi'isp, there being no additional charge. A stand with seating accommodation for 600 people has been erected, but intending patrons are advised to secure (heir seats early, as flic number i* limited. No booking will be accepted after to-morrow. Henri Cocliet will play at Tolaga Bay on Monday.* SPOT! TS CO -O PE RAT ID N Evidence of the desire of associations administering sports other than lawn tennis to co-operate with the Poverty Bay and East Coast Lawn Tennis Association in making the visit of Cocliet and his team of professional tennis players a success was given at a special meeting of the Cricket Association's executive held last evening. Those present at the meeting comprised Messrs. If. E. Maude, chairman. W. Stewart, M. K. Boon, D. Wells, A. Bigriall, A. R. Baker, P. C. Dwyer, and A. 11. Wright, lion, secretary to the association. The chairman explained that the members had been called together to consider a request from the Poverty Bay and East Coast Lawn Tennis Association that no obstacle should be placed in the way of cricketers wishing to see the display to he given by the visiting professional tennis players. After some discussion, the following motion, offered by Mr. Boon and seconded by Mr. Bignall, was carried: —- “That in response to the request ol Ihe Lawn Tennis Association, the cricket matches set down for Saturday, March 7. he played as drawn, hut that no points iio awarded in tho club competition; this is to enable all cricketers who so desire to attend the tennis exhibition, and at the same time eater for those who wish to play cricket.”-
