LORRY DRIVER'S ESCAPE

PLUNGE OVER CLIFF Leaping out of the pah of his lorry as it plunged toward Ihe edge of a steep cliff below the road between Lake Okataina and the main highway, n young man, Mr. A. D. Wedding, employed by Mr. A. D. Ffardie. carrier, of Rolorua, paved himself from certain death by the narrowest, margin. The remnants of the vehicle were scattered over a wide area at the foot of the cliff and were so completely shattered that any efforts to salvage the portions of the wreckage were abandoned. The accident occurred early ;n the afternoon while the lorry was ascending the steep bush road which climbs over the high bluffs overlooking Lake Okataina. The driver had on board a load of posts anil encountered difficulty when the machine skidded in some loose earth.

As he swung the lorry in an effort to bring if buck on to the track, the rear of the machine struck a, tree with the result that the vehicle became completely out of control and plunged straight for the edge of the cliff. Realising his danger, the driver jumped from the cab when it was almost on the lip of the drop.
