SIXTY MAORI TEACHERS

REFRESHER COURSE GATHERING AT TIKITIIvT There were 60 Maori teachers at the refresher course held (or them at Tikitiki during the latter part of last week, and many of the residents of the district also attended the lectures. Those who delivered lectures were Sir Apirana Ngata j Dr. Sutherland, Victoria University College; Mr. Hipkius. Wellington Technical College: Messrs. Ball, Fletcher and Dcnne, native school inspectors • Mrs. Parr, Ratana Pa Native School; Mr. Lockharl, instructor of agriculture, Hawke's Bav Education Board; Dr. Wi Repa; Mr. P. Cree. physical instructor, Wellington; Mr. Pine Taiepa, Rotorua School of Maori Art; Nurse Banks, Tikitiki. Dr. Sutherland's subjects were "Race Mentality," "Maori 'Migration," and. "The Pakeha and the Maori." Dr. Wi Repa dealt with the history of the Ngaliporou tribe and the modern outlook of the Maori, while Sir Apirana Ngata spoke on Maori arts and crafts.

Demonstrations of mat weaving, taniko work and plaiting were given by ladies of the district.

On Friday night those attending the refresher course were entertained at a social and dance given by Sir Apirana and Lady Ngata in the Tikitiki Hall, and were again guests at- a luncheon party at Tikitiki pa on Saturday given by the hosts of the previous night,
