TRUNK CALL RUSH
£3,000,000 FOR CABLES ORDERS IN BRITAIN LONDON, Jan. V. The Post Office this year will lay new cables, costing £3,000,000, largely to carry the rush of cheap night trunk calls.
New main-line long-distance cables will stretch across Britain from Lou don to Liverpool, Birmingham to Cambridge, Glasgow to Oban, Bristol In Portsmouth, and from Edinburgh to Aberdeen.
Increased telephone circuits wilt bo created by further work on the existing main cables between Liverpool and Glasgow, Leeds and Derby, London and Bristol, Carlisle and Newcastle. LOOKING AHEAD. Many shorter-distance cables -will be laid down. All this is being done m preparation for the increased use ol the*telephone and an increasing number of subscribers.
It is anticipated that in March of this year the Post Office will reiuuv trunk telephone charges during the day to a maximum of 2s. Od. This reduction will not interfere with the cheap Is. night, rate. New plans havo been made, too, ioi telephone exchanges. lii London during 1936 21 new 'automatic telephone exchanges will be set up. Forty-four will become auto, matic. in the provinces.
. Ope hundred and fifty rural automatic exchanges will be erected —to bring the telephone service into outlying country districts. This programme will mean increased employment and a bigger pay roll. During last year developments led to the increased employment of 8000 people. The pay roll of the Post Office rose by £3,000,000. Post Office profits increased by approximately £1,000,000 over the previous year.
