ROADS FOR DEFENCE
IX NORTH AUSTRALIA BRISBANE, Pel). 4. Queensland is ready to eo-operntc with the federal Government in any plans that may be made for constructing noil hern roads for defence purposes. The Minister for Public Works, Mr. Bruce, made this plain yesterday, when lie said that the Commonwealth should give serious .consideration to this aspect of national policy. There was need for roads along the country's entire northern coastline, and they should lie regarded as an essential part of .any sound defence scheme. Roads would be useful for other purposes, Mr. Bruce said, but the military authorities could advise as to the courses they should .follow in order lo lie of the greatest strategical value. The plan should not be limited 10 Queensland; but should extend through the Northern Territory and the northern parts of Western Australia. Kond construction was but one important phase of an adequate defence scheme, which should include provision of aeroplane depots at points along the Queensland coast, and at Darwin and Broome.
